A pro-democracy group, Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNDC) has asked Gov. Nasir Elrufai of Kaduna State to perish the idea that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen, will step aside to please his political interest.

CDNDC in a statement by its Convener, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, said: “a governor who committed treason against Nigeria by going outside the country under shadowy arrangement to pay terrorists money is not a fit and proper person to challenge the CJN.

“A governor who was challenged over his assets declaration form and instead of making it public to the people of Kaduna State, decided to go to court, is not by any standard qualified to ask the CJN to step aside.

“A man who on Channels Television, in other to get at the CJN for political reasons, openly lied to the whole world that his assets declaration form and that of the President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are in the public, is not honourable enough to challenge Justice Onnoghen.

“We want to challenge Gov. Elrufai, President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo to publicly make available their assets declaration forms if they want anyone to take them seriously over their double deals in the onslaught against the CJN,” the statement added.

CDNDC also noted that Section 3 (d) of the CCB Act is very clear that once the CCB: “Receive complaints about non‐compliance with or breach of this Act and where the Bureau considers it necessary to do so, refer such complaints to the Code of Conduct Tribunal established by section 20 of this Act in accordance with the provisions of sections 20 to 25 of this Act: Provided that where the person concerned makes a written admission of such breach or non‐compliance, no reference to the Tribunal shall be necessary.”

The CJN has done the needful and he cannot be tried based on the CCB Act, the group said.
